Amos was a shepherd and a navi.
Rambam was a physician and a torah scholar.
The Lubavitcher Rebbe was a torah scholar with a degree in electrical engineering. When he was young, he was homeschooled.1
Throughout Jewish history, Jewish (home) educators wanted children to study Torah diligently, but also to learn about HaShem’s world and to prepare them for learning a trade.
To continue that tradition, educators today have easier access to learning resources for both limudei kodesh and limudei chol than any generation before us. And yet, some materials and ideas to “Educate the child according to his way recognizing each one’s unique path in serving Hashem“2 seem not yet to exist, or be hard to find.
So on this page, BE”H, I’ll share both resources I found and resources I created.
““To educate a Jewish child is not merely a task – it is a holy mission, a partnership with the Creator Himself.””
From: “Does the Rebbe Have a Chinuch Methodology?”3
There is such joy in this mission – and so much to learn.
My background
Here’s a little about who I am and what I bring to this journey.
I have a Master’s in Jewish Education from Hebrew University. I also have qualified teacher status in two countries and a doctorate. I’ve worked in education, including research and teaching teachers, for almost two decades. Among many other experiences, I’m an advisory member of the steering committee of the IGU’s Commission on Geographic Education and the author of the chapter on textbooks and instructional materials in the international Handbook of Geography Education. (If you want to know more about my academic experience, head over to katieschulman.com). Now I’m mostly focusing on educating my own children at home.
I love learning. As an educator, it’s my nature to share what I learn with others.
