A big list of resources for Jewish home educators

Links to support groups, curricula for Jewish & secular studies, and sites from Jewish homeschoolers — all in one place

A growing directory for Jewish families who are homeschooling — or thinking about it.

A note on inclusion: Jewish homeschoolers are wonderfully diverse — in their educational philosophies, in how they approach Jewish practice, and in what works for their families. A resource that’s a perfect fit for one family might not suit another, and that’s completely fine.

Everything here was gathered to save you search time, not to imply a personal endorsement. Some resources I’ve used myself; many I haven’t. Some reflect my own hashkafa; some don’t. The goal is simply to give you a useful starting point and let you decide what fits your family.

This list is under active development — if you spot a gap or know of something that should be here, please share it. Send an email with a link or description to contact@raisedgrounded.com

Thanks to everyone who has shared resources. : )

Legal

Homeschooling is legal across the U.S., but that’s not the case in every country.

What you have to do to legally homeschool, and whether there are specific requirements, depends on where you live. For instance, some areas require specific subjects that need to be taught.

For the U.S., HLSDA has an overview by state. You can also Google homeschooling law ‘your state’ site:.gov to get the official site of your state.

Support groups

Local

Local Jewish homeschooling groups are available in several areas. Join the nearest Jewish homeschooling group(s), even if it is not in your city. There might be field trips, for instance, that are much closer to you than you might have assumed. There might also be a WhatsApp group where you can get support (even if you can’t often come to the local meetings). Moreover, people in these groups are often knowledgeable about what is (not) available locally, such as a library that carries Jewish curricula.

Maryland has a Jewish homeschooling umbrella group, LHUG.

North Texas Jewish Orthodox Homeschoolers have a website

Facebook

Facebook has several groups for Jewish homeschoolers:

The Jewish homeschooling group in Baltimore has its own Facebook group.

Mechanos/ Mechanchim Exchange

The Mechanos Exchange/ the Mechanchim Exchange are platforms for Chabad teachers to exchange materials, but they explicitly allow homeschooling parents to sign up. Sign-up is free, but getting added to the Google Drive requires sharing five materials you created. It is also said to include a WhatsApp community.

WhatsApp

Local Jewish homeschooling groups often have WhatsApp groups.

There are tons of places to find general studies curricula.

Freedom Homeschooling maintains a large collection of free curriculum options with descriptions.

Paid curriculum can be accessed through marketplaces, local stores, Amazon, Second Harvest, large supplies such as Rainbow Resources, or the publishers themselves, such as Singapore Math or BFSU. There are numerous blogs with reviews, books that aim to present a selection (e.g., Susan Wise Bauer’s The Well-Trained Mind and the associated forum), non-Jewish review sites such as CathyDuffy, and communities that discuss options.

Many of the popular secular studies curricula come with their own user communities that can help with questions and share resources.

Also check the laws of your country/ state. For instance, if you live in Pennsylvania, “The school district of residence shall, at the request of the supervisor, lend to the home education program copies of the school district’s planned courses, textbooks and other curriculum materials appropriate to the student’s age and grade level”1.
